This weekend I had a surprise visit from my brother, sister-in-law and my niece Mia. Saturday was my nieces birthday and I was hoping that I could travel back home to be with her but I was called into work and unfortunately was not able to get out in time to leave. Instead they decided to make it easier in me and they made the seven hour trip from McAllen to College Station. I was so excited to see her and even more excited to read her "Happy Birthday To You!" by Dr. Seuss. I know reading her a book is not much to be excited about but I share my birthday with my cousin and as a child I felt like I had to share the spotlight with her.
For my seventh birthday my mom woke me up really early and she had this birthday bag set on the table and told me to go ahead and look inside. When I reached in and pulled out the book she offered to read it to me. As she did, I realized that the message the book was trying to convey was that no matter who you share your birthday with you are special and this day is yours no matter what. I remember feeling so happy after my mom was threw reading me this book and I knew that though she couldn't get me everything I wanted and though I did share my birthday with my cousin, its my day and no one can take it from me.
Reading this book to my niece brought back all these memories and I felt great after I was done reading to her. Though she doesn't talk much yet I know that she was very happy.
